Tips to keep bikers safe on Kentucky roads

On Behalf of | Sep 19, 2022 | Motorcycle Accidents |

Kentucky has so many beautiful scenic roads and areas, and one of the best ways to explore these hidden gems is on a motorcycle. While most of us can appreciate that motorcycling carries some risks, we may not know the best way to bike safely and drive safely around bikers.

Safety tips for bikers

Motorcyclists can take preventative measures to stay safe on the road. First, they should make sure they understand how to handle their vehicle and have the proper training and license to do so. It can take time and practice to navigate the many road, traffic and weather conditions you will face on the road when motorcycling.

Motorcyclists should also make sure to follow the rules of the road. You cannot control other drivers, but you can put yourself in a position of safety via your own actions. Riding under the influence of alcohol should always be avoided.

Motorcyclists should also always wear a helmet and protective clothing. Helmets with the Department of Transportation (DOT) symbol on them are generally safe to use.

Safety tips for motorists

Motorists have a duty of care when behind the wheel. They must exercise due caution, and part of this means practicing motorcycle awareness. This means always being cognizant of motorcyclists sharing the road with them. Motorcycles are smaller and more difficult to see, but motorists must be vigilant.

Motorists also should always follow the rules of the road, and yield to a motorcyclist’s right of way when appropriate. This may be at a four-way stop, a left-turn arrow or a yield sign. Speeding should be avoided, as should drunk driving.

Motorcyclists are very vulnerable to injuries if struck by a car. Major injuries can turn your financial, personal and professional life upside down. Fortunately, bikers who are struck by cars have legal options to learn more about that could provide them with the compensation they need to begin the healing process.
